Roundsourcing Podcast (Brazil): Interview with Fabiana Kent Paiva at the FINIT Innovation Fair
Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais in Southeastern Brazil, is often described as the emerging center for entrepreneurs and startups in Latin America. Although political unrest has dragged the national economy to a recession, the tech innovation and startup sector has seen a sharp rise in Brazil, attracting foreign investments, generating considerable revenue and creating thousands of much needed jobs.
Minas Gerais has four of the country’s top 10 universities and some 5,000 tech companies spread out over 35 cities. Belo Horizonte alone is home to about 300 startups. Google opened its first Latin American R&D center here more than ten years ago. The company recently invested in additional facilities to harness the conducive climate for innovation, propelled by the state tech startup accelerator program launched in 2012.
Belo Horizonte was host to the first ever International Fair of Business, Innovation and Technology (FINIT). Organized by the Minas Gerais Secretariat of Science, Technology and Higher Education, the four-day event was one of the biggest technology and innovation events in the world with some 10,000 visitors daily. The goal of this major event was to bring together startups, large companies, students, researchers and other professionals in technology and innovation.
